The key is not to confuse "baseline" with "basepath". The baseLINE is the line from base to base and can be marked (home to first or third to home) or unmarked (first to second to third). The basePATH is not established UNTIL a fielder WITH THE BALL attempts to tag a runner. Then the base path is a straight line from the runner's position to the base to which he is advancing or retreating. The fielder was catching the ball on the infield side of the baseLINE and the runner saw that and jumped to the opposite side. The basePATH from runner to home was created near the center of the baseLINE at the moment the fielder caught the ball. Given the 3-foot leeway to maneuver to miss the fielder's tag, the ump decided he was safe. It was marginal, but it's the ump's call.

no you can easily get the lines on the turf field mixed up in the moment. plus the way he was rounding 3rd would have an effect on the play too. plus the kid was in the base path for him to go though. meaning if the kid run into him. it would be an obstruction and he’d get home.
